Reflexology
Meet our certified Reflexologist - Barbara Cushman
Barb has studied with Janet Stetser of Footloose, Inc., and completed her course in hand and foot
reflexology in June, 1997. She became ARCB (American Reflexology Certification Board) certified
October, 1999. She has personal insurance through the International Massage Association and is a
member of MCR (Maine Council of Reflexologists).
Barb’s practice is very part-time. She will begin working at The Foot Oasis and will take guest with
advanced appointments only. She uses only her hands in her reflexology and works dry until the end
when she uses a lotion (many times having calendula in it, which is very healing). Barb is also a Reiki
practitioner and herbal counselor with several herbal apprenticeships under her belt.
Barb regularly attends workshops to stay up with this healing modality. Some workshops include:
Reflexology and Meridian Therapy with Lilian Morten
Meridian Theory & Practice, Hand Reflexology, Auricular Therapy with Beryl Crane
Hand Reflexology with Kristi Tanner
Metamorphosis
She has also attended workshops with Bill Flocco, Sandi Rogers, and Bill Runquist, who are prominent in
the field of Reflexology.
Barb strongly believes in reflexology as a healing modality. She knows reflexology works and believes
the body will heal if given a chance to relax and take care of itself. Make an appointment and see for
yourself, you will absolutely love it.
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is an ancient healing art designed to bring the body into healthful balance. It is based on the
premise that all organs, limbs and body systems have corresponding reflex points on the feet and hands.
Linked to these reflexes are energy pathways which can become imbalanced or blocked by factors such as
stress, diet and lifestyle. Tender reflexes are easy to find on the feet and indicate which areas of the body
are not functioning properly. Working these tender reflexes helps to re-balance and unblock these areas.
Reflexology is a method of activating the natural healing powers of the body. It has been known to man
for many thousands of years and practiced by early Chinese, Indian and Egyptian people.
In the 1930's Dr. Fitzgerald wrote a book on zone therapy and his physiotherapist, Eunice Ingham, began
doing work with reflexology. A great deal of where reflexology in the United States is today is attributed
to Eunice Ingham. By using Dr. Fitzgerald's ten zones, which run from head to toe through the body, a
map of the feet was developed. This map provides for the reflexologist a working picture of the body
reflected on the feet.
Falling into the realm of alternative medicine, reflexology is a drugless therapy for better health and
preventative health care. A reflexologist believes that the feet mirror the body and all parts are reflected
there. Six of the twelve meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine end in the feet. These energy
pathways are stimulated during a reflexology session.
Most people live their lives in such a way that leaves little time for themselves and no time for their feet.
And yet our feet take the brunt of our daily living for all of our lives. Reflexology stimulates circulation
which can aid the body in ridding itself of toxins and impurities. Stress and tension can be reduced by a
reflexology session, thus deepening relaxation and allowing the body the opportunity to heal. Having
given your feet an hour of well deserved attention, a sense of well being and calm is restored to the whole
person.
